Nareit Foundation Awards $211,000 in Grants to Four Nonprofits Providing Support with Affordable Housing Initiatives

Oct 15, 2025

HONOLULU – Oct. 15, 2025 - Along with the grant presented to the Kunia Village Development Corporation, the Nareit Foundation awarded grants today to four additional nonprofits in support of their efforts to provide affordable housing for residents in need on Molokai, Hawaii Island, and Oahu. The grant awardees are as follows.

Molokai Affordable Housing Alliance: $27,000

The Molokai Affordable Housing Alliance will utilize the $27,000 Nareit Foundation grant to help low- and moderate-income residents struggling with severe housing instability and food insecurity on Molokai. The grant will support native Hawaiian beneficiaries living in the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands’ Nā‘iwa Agricultural Subdivision.

Many of the subdivision homes do not have an established water connection, and residents must haul in their water. The grant will be used to install a rainwater catchment system to help supply the daily needs of residents for consumption, and for gardening and farming purposes.

Project Hawaii: $50,000

Project Hawaii is committed to improving the lives of homeless children on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii Island through a variety of interactive, confidence-building programs, such as educational support, summer camps, holiday events, and regular outreach.

The $50,000 Nareit Foundation grant will support the housing accommodations for six at-risk women attending college on Hawaii Island, by funding the installation of bath and shower rooms, two bedrooms, and a student service center. These housing improvements will provide the young women with stable living conditions, allowing them to focus on their education and future success, and break free from generational poverty.

The Institute for Human Services: $54,000

The Institute for Human Services manages Kahauiki Village, a 144-unit permanent housing program in Kalihi Kai for formerly homeless families and kupuna. Providing a community where children can grow and thrive in a safe, clean and healthy atmosphere is vital to the purpose of Kahauiki Village.

The $54,000 Nareit Foundation grant is being utilized to refurbish the community’s basketball court, which serves as an important centerpiece for organizing structured activities to bring at-risk children and teens together for positive experiences, to learn about teamwork and sportsmanship, and build their self-esteem.

Project Vision Hawaii: $80,000

Project Vision Hawaii is dedicated to promoting health, happiness and dignity for all. The nonprofit is managing eight units at the Puahala Apartments in Kalihi to help residents successfully transition out of homelessness. Residents work with case managers to address issues ranging from mental health needs to employment readiness.

The $80,000 Nareit Foundation grant will fund a variety of apartment upgrades to improve the safety, comfort and quality of living conditions. This includes the purchase and installation of two washer and dryer sets for the laundry room, repairing the plumbing in the kitchens and bathrooms, upgrading the flooring, and replacing furnishings, windows and screens.

Grants Provided Through the Nareit Hawaii Community Giving Initiative

The grants awarded to the five organizations are funded by the Nareit Foundation, a Section 501(c)(3) organization, and REITs operating in Hawaii as part of the Nareit Hawaii Community Giving Initiative, which supports affordable housing projects provided by nonprofits.

Hawaii REITs are long-term property holders that own, renovate and manage affordable housing projects, commercial buildings, shopping centers, medical office buildings, logistical spaces and warehouses for small businesses, cell phone towers, public storage facilities, and hotels.
